When to Repot

July 7th, 2023

Knowing when to repot your indoor plants is an important part of plant maintenance. Here are my tips and tricks on repotting.

Bigger pot = Bigger plant, right?

This is a common misconception that can result in poor plant health. When repotting your plant, it is importanty to pick a pot that is 2-3" bigger than the root system.  Putting a small root system in a large pot does not stimulate growth, but results in root rot due to too much soil retaining water around the small root system. However, leaving your plant squished in a pot without room to grow will show you a very unhappy plant as well.

So what are the signs your plant needs a bigger home?

1. If your plant is in drainage (as it should be) look at the bottom of the pot for roots growing out of the drainage holes.

2. Try probing the soil with your finger or a chopstick, If it is difficult to push through, it means your plants’ root system has outgrown the pot.

3. Other signs your plant may need repotting include if the plant is drying out faster than usual resulting in increased watering or if the plant health is declining without the presence of pests or a watering issue.
